Pfeiffer Men's Basketball Too Much For Johnson & Wales
Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 18, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team topped 100 points for the first time this season while hitting nine three-pointers in a 105-99 home nonconference win over visiting Johnson & Wales on Wednesday night in Merner Gym.
After being knotted at 42-42 at halftime, Pfeiffer fell behind the visiting Wildcats 60-58 but went on a tear, primarily thanks to the hot shooting of freshman
Ty Black (Charlotte, N.C.). Black hit the first of four-straight three pointers to go up 61-60 at 12:52.
Black would hit his fifth from distance at 9:55 that would push Pfeiffer ahead 75-64. The lead would then grow to 85-69 after a pair of
Rashamel Butler (Ridgeland, S.C.) free throws. JWU would attempt a comeback, closing to a few as seven points late in the game, but would get no closer, with Pfeiffer earning the 105-99 win. All told, Pfeiffer would score 63 second half points.
Butler would lead the Falcon cause with 24 points and five rebounds. Black, thanks to his hot shooting, contributed a career-best 20 points after going 6-of-10 from long range.Â
M.J. Armstrong (Gastonia, N.C.) secured another double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while
Daymon Beckwith (Jacksonville, N.C.) and
Clayton Robinson (Charlotte, N.C.) finished with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
JWU got a game-high 34 points from Anthoney Ray while teammate Jaylen Benson-Hollinhead had 21 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 6-8 overall while JWU drops to 6-10 overall.
Pfeiffer will return to USA South play on Saturday, Jan. 21 with a 2:00 p.m. game at rival Greensboro College.
