Pfeiffer Baseball Walks Off USA South Series Opener Against WPU
Misenheimer, N.C. (April 15, 2023) – Pfeiffer graduate student
Christian Ezzell ripped a one-out double to right center field to earn a 3-2 walk off win in the USA South series opener with William Peace on a sunny and warm Joe Ferebee Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Basics
Visiting William Peace got on the board first in the top of the second inning on an RBI groundout to go ahead 1-0.
Freshman
Austin Wood got an RBI single to right field that scored Ezzell in the fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Later that inning, Corey Lackey would bring in Wood on a single to center field, pushing Pfeiffer ahead 2-1.
The score would remain 2-1 until the top of the ninth inning, when WPU would get an RBI double from Patrick Roga to knot the game at 2-2.
IN the ninth Pfeiffer got a leadoff single from sophomore
Josh Turner that made it through the left side of the WPU infield. A sacrifice bunt from senior
Brady Parker allowed Turner to advance to second. Ezzell's then delivered his game-winning hit to right center on a 1-0 count that gave the Falcons the series opening win.
Falcon pitcher
John Owen got the complete game win to improve to 4-2 on the season. Owen struck out 10 WPU batters while allowing two runs on just five hits.
Owens' WPU counterpart Philip Berger also pitcher a complete game, falling to 3-4 overall while allowing nine Pfeiffer hits and three runs, with one being earned.
