Top-Seeded Pfeiffer Softball Opens USA South Tournament With 5-2 Win Over #8 Southern Virginia
Misenheimer, N.C. (May 4, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University softball team opened USA South Tournament play with a 5-2 win over eighth-seeded Southern Virginia University on Thursday afternoon at Jack Ingram Field

How it Happened
The visiting Knights had eyes on the first round upset as they took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double from Krystal Kemp in the first inning.
Pfeiffer tied the game in the third when
Kenzi Lyall singled up the middle that allowed
Alexis Walter to score.
Later in the third,
Kyndell Warren collected an RBI on a fielder's choice, then
Emma Chopko rripped a single down the third base line to send Pfeiffer to the 3-1 lead.
SVU's Krailyn Guymon hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to pull to 3-2, but Lyall returned the favor in the Falcon fifth inning, as she lifted her eighth home run of the season to make it 4-2.
Gretchen Wolpert got an RBI in the sixth on a single up the middle that scored pinch runner
Micah Felts to stake Pfeiffer to the 5-3 lead.
Kali Morton, who was named the USA South Pitcher of the Year earlier in the day, retired the SVU lineup in order in the seventh inning to advance Pfeiffer into the winner's bracket.
In game two of the day, No. 5 William Peace University downed No. 4 Meredith College by a 3-1 final.
