Ezzell Homers Twice in USA South Opening Win for Pfeiffer Baseball
Rocky Mount, N.C. (May 5, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University baseball team won their opening game of the USA South Tournament over rival Greensboro by a 6-2 final on Friday at N.C. Wesleyan.
How it Happened
Pfeiffer did most of their damage in the fourth inning in jumping out to a 4-0 lead.Â
Jake Brown got things started for the Falcons as he made it 1-0 with an RBI groundout. Following an RBI double from
Josh Turner,
Christian Ezzell launched a two-run home run to left field to put the Falcons up 4-0.
Zach Ferrell then made it 5-0 for Pfeiffer in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed
C.J. Acosta to scamper home.
A Greensboro solo home run in the fourth trimmed Pfeiffer's lead to 5-1. Ezzell got that run back for Pfeiffer, as he hit another home run, this one a solo shot to left field to extend the Falcon lead to 6-1.
Greensboro scored on an RBI single in the eighth inning, but that would be the closest the would get, as Pfeiffer won the opening round game, 6-2.
Greensboro would later be eliminated by host N.C. Wesleyan by a 5-3 score in the final game of the afternoon.
Pfeiffer's
John Owen earned the win on the mound, as he tossed eight innings, allowing just two runs on six hits. He struck out six Pride batters on the afternoon and improved his season record to 7-2.
The Falcons and Bishops will square off in what will be a best-of-three series that will start on Saturday afternoon in Rocky Mount.
