Horton's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Pfeiffer Past Mary Baldwin, 58-56

Staunton, Va. (Jan. 12, 2024) - Sophomore Miya Horton knocked down a buzzer-beating shot from 19 feet out to lift the Pfeiffer women's basketball team to a 58-56 USA South road win over Mary Baldwin University on Friday night.

The Falcons (3-9, 2-5 USA South ) had two players score in double figures, led by sophomore Hannah Isley, who had 16 points and two steals. Freshman Peyton McPeters tacked on 10 points and two steals and fellow freshman Lola Cabiness-Ali added two points, 12 rebounds and five assists.

Pfeiffer out-rebounded Mary Baldwin 34-27 in Friday's game, paced by Cabiness-Ali's 12 boards. The Falcons also collected 13 offensive rebounds and scored two second chance points.

Pfeiffer forced 23 Mary Baldwin turnovers while committing 21 themselves in Friday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. Horton led the way individually with three steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-5, Pfeiffer went on an 11-0 run with 3:39 left in the first quarter to take a 16-7 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Pfeiffer capitalized on nine Mary Baldwin turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

The Falcons could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 27-25.

Pfeiffer came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Isley, to grab a 32-27 lead with 7:41 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Fighting Squirrels had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 41-38 edge. Pfeiffer knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 16 total points.

Mary Baldwin took the 56-53 lead following three free throws with 46 seconds left.  On the Falcons' next possession McPeters tied the game at 56-56 after drilling a three-pointer from in front of the Falcon bench.

On MBU's next possession, Aryauna Brent drove to the basket but was whistled for an offensive foul after Isley drew a charge with 6.1 seconds remaining.

Following a Pfeiffer timeout, the Falcons inbounds play went to Lola Cabiness-Ali at the free throw line, then Horton stepped back and knocked down the game-winner as the buzzer sounded, snapping an eight-game skid and earning the first conference road win since a 69-56 win at Salem College on Jan. 21, 2023.
