MISENHEIMER, N.C. (Feb. 10, 2024) --The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team fell 82-66 to the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels at home Saturday on Alumni Day at Merner Gym.
The Falcons (8-12, 5-7) had two players score in double figures, led by junior Daymon Beckwith, who had 13 points. Junior Alex Cunningham was the other Falcon to achieve double figures as he tacked on 10 points. Doug Smith added six points, nine rebounds and four blocks in the losing effort.
Led by Smith's three offensive rebounds, Pfeiffer did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
Pfeiffer did a great job disrupting Mary Baldwin shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Smith's four rejections led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After falling behind 28-23, Pfeiffer went on a 6-0 run with 8:25 left in the first half to take a 29-28 lead. The Falcons then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 44-41.
Mary Baldwin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 61-52 advantage before Pfeiffer went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 61-57 with 10:21 to go in the contest. Mary Baldwin responded and outscored the Falcons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 82-66. Pfeiffer got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 13 of its 25 total points.
