The Village Wins Again! Women's Basketball Takes Care of Southern Virginia

MISENHEIMER, N.C. (February 21, 2025) — Miya Horton poured in a career-high 28 points and Pfeiffer used a dominant fourth quarter to edge league-leading Southern Virginia 69-64 on Saturday in USA South women's basketball action at Merner Gym.

It was Pfeiffer's first ever win over Southern Virginia.

Pfeiffer (15-10, 12-6 USA South) steadily climbed back after trailing 36–33 at halftime, leaning on Horton's efficient 11-for-13 shooting and six made free throws. Ava Hairston added 14 points and eight rebounds, hitting several key free throws in the final minutes. The Falcons were aggressive throughout, going 22 of 39 from the line while forcing 11 turnovers and scoring 15 points off those mistakes.

Southern Virginia (18–7, 16–2) was carried by a spectacular offensive performance from Abigail Snyder, who scored a game-high 31 points on 11-of-19 shooting, including 3 of 6 from long range. Anna Kimball added 10 points before fouling out, and Maria Savvun chipped in 9. Despite shooting 48 percent from the field, the Knights were hurt by foul trouble and Pfeiffer's 32 bench points..XML)

The game featured 13 ties and 14 lead changes. Pfeiffer finally took control midway through the fourth quarter, using defensive pressure and transition scores to create separation. Horton's steal and layup with 45 seconds left pushed the Falcons ahead 67–64, and Pfeiffer closed it out at the free-throw line.

Pfeiffer's win secured its 12th conference victory and delivered Southern Virginia just its second USA South loss of the season.  The win is Pfeiffer's most since joining the USA South and is also the most since the 2017-18 season, when Pfeiffer secured a 20-5 season.

By virtue of the win, Pfeiffer earns the fourth seed in the upcoming USA South Tournament and will host a first round game for the first time since joining the league.  The Falcons will welcome fifth-seeded William Peace University back to The Village on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
