BUENA VISTA, Va. (Feb. 7, 2025) — Clayton Robinson scored 19 points and Pfeiffer rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to edge Southern Virginia 71–69 on Saturday in USA South men's basketball action.
Robinson shot 8-of-13 from the field and added six rebounds, while
Sean Sucarichi scored 11 and
Doug Smith added 11 points and five boards for the Falcons, who improved to 12–8 overall and 8–2 in league play.
After trailing 44–32 at the break, Pfeiffer flipped the game with a 39-25 second half, sparked by improved defense and timely scoring. The Falcons forced 16 turnovers and converted them into 20 points, while outscoring the Knights 20–12 in fast-break opportunities.
Down 62-48 with 10:05 remaining in the second half, Pfeiffer went on a 19-0 run, holding SVU scoreless for seven minutes and 46 seconds while taking the 67-62 lead.
Sucarichi's layup with 2:39 left stretched Pfeiffer's lead to 67–62, and Smith's bucket with 1:11 remaining pushed it to 71–67. Southern Virginia closed within two on a Tillman Johnson layup with 44 seconds left but was unable to score again. The Knights' potential game-winning 3-point attempt in the closing seconds wasn't close, with Pfeiffer getting out of town with the 71-69 win.
With the win, Pfeiffer sweeps the season series with SVU, with both league losses for the Knights coming at the hands of the Falcons.
Southern Virginia (12–8, 8–2 USA South) was led by Jude Ballstaedt's game-high 22 points and Ashton Davis' 11 points and six rebounds.
Pfeiffer, winners of eight straight, returns to Merner Gym for a 7:30 p.m. game against Brevard on Wednesday, Feb. 11 as part of a doubleheader with the Pfeiffer women's team.
