Men's Basketball Suffers First Loss of the Season; Ends 24 Game Regular Season Win Streak

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, GA  -- For the first time this season, the Pfeiffer men's basketball team (11-1) suffered a loss, falling at Covenant (8-7) by a final score of 105-101 on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons were held to a season-low 101 points and suffered their first regular season loss since dropping a 109-99 contest at Limestone over one year ago.

Pfeiffer had won 24 straight regular season contests heading into today's battle but the Scots were ready. A back-and-forth game all afternoon saw nine ties and 17 lead changes before the hosts pulled away late.

Covenant shot 56.1 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from long range in the upset victory. Pfeiffer was held under 50 percent shooting for just the third time this season. However, Pfeiffer was hot from long range, shooting 47.8 percent from behind the arc.

Covenant held a narrow 35-33 advantage on the glass and assisted on 25 of their 37 made field goals.

Pfeiffer was led by senior guard Josh Calhoun who scored 21 points and added four assists and two steals. Josiah Avington (12 points), Craig Sabb (11 points), Brendan Jones (10 points) and Eric Ambrosio (10 points) all scored in double-figures in the losing effort.

Three players scored 20 points or more for Covenant, led by James Mitchell's 21 points on seven 3-pointers. Berto Dryden and Caleb Haynes each added 20 points with Haynes going a perfect 9-for-9 from the field.

Down 93-90 with 3:40 to go, the Falcons rallied for the game's next five points to reclaim a 95-93 advantage. Covenant responded with four straight to jump ahead 97-95 before a huge 3-point basket by Marcus Sawyers with 1:41 to play gave the Falcons a one point lead.

Unfortunately, the Scots went on a 6-0 run to take a five point lead with just 15 seconds to play. Sawyers buried a corner 3-pointer to pull Pfeiffer within two points but Dryden calmly sank a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to go to secure the win for Covenant.

Pfeiffer will look to start a new winning streak tomorrow when they travel to Maryville for a 3 p.m. start.
