Pfeiffer Men's Basketball Takes Down Warren Wilson, 135-127
Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 16, 2018) – The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team had five players score in double-figures and hit 22 three-pointers on the way to a 135-127 win over Warren Wilson College at Merner Gym on Friday night.
Pfeiffer's Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) and Kyle Riddley (Charlotte, N.C.) each poured in career-highs with 37 points each in the win. Sabb finished with 11 rebounds to secure the double-double while Riddley had nine rebounds. Sabb also finished 13-of-14 from the free throw line. Also with a career-high was sophomore Blake Smith (Wilmington, N.C.), as he had 27 points on a terrific shooting night, going 9-of-12 from the field and 8-of-11 from long range.
The Falcons also got 14 points from Josiah Avington (Fredericksburg, Va.) and 10 from
Taylan Rowe (Oakboro, N.C.). Avington hit four three-pointers on the night while Rowe finished 4-of-7 from the field with two from distance.
As a team, Pfeiffer shot 51.3% (41-of-80) on the night and was 22-of-37 from long range, good for 44%.
For Warren Wilson, Jordan Gant had a game-high 39 points as he went 13-of-25 from the field while hitting six three pointers. Teammate Brent Davis had a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
In the first half, the visiting Owls went up 13-6 at the 15:22 mark after a Jaquann Lockhard jumper, but the Falcons would pull to within 13-10, but Warren Wilson responded quickly, going up 21-12, their largest lead of the game with 13:47 to play after a Justin Storr three-pointer.
Pfeiffer would tie the game at 23-23 when Rowe drilled a three pointer, then jumped ahead 38-30 on a Smith long-ball with 6:10 before halftime. Warren Wilson would tie the game at 40-40 with 3:00 to play, but Pfeiffer put together a 14-5 run to take the 54-45 lead into halftime.
The Falcons then started hot in the second half, bolting out to a 75-51 lead at the 16:59 mark after a 19-6 run to start the half. Pfeiffer would enjoy their largest lead of the game at 27 points (82-55) with 15:13 left, but Warren Wilson began chipping away at the Falcon lead, drawing to within eight points on three different occasions late in the half. With Pfeiffer leading 133-125, the Owls got a layup from Davis to close to within 133-127 with 12 seconds left, but two late Sabb free throws would provide the 135-127 final.
With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 2-0 while Warren Wilson drops to 3-4 on the season. IN addition, the 135 points scored was the most since the Falcons scored 132 in a 132-76 win at N.C. Wesleyan on Feb. 17, 2018. The Falcons will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 17, hosting Carolina Christian at 1:00 p.m. in Merner Gym.
