Riddley's Free Throws Lift Pfeiffer to 114-113 Win Over Greensboro

Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 16, 2019) –
Senior forward Kyle Riddley hit two free throws with one second remaining to lift the Pfeiffer University men's basketball team to a 114-113 USA South win over visiting Greensboro College on Wednesday night in Merner Gym.

The Charlotte native's heroics came after the visiting Pride erased a 13-point (100-87) Pfeiffer lead by hitting three consecutive three-pointers, drawing to 100-98 with 5:49 left.

The Pride would take the 103-102 lead after a Michael Phifer layup with 4:45 left.  Pfeiffer would draw even at 103-103 after a Riddley free throw at the 4:29 mark.

After being tied at 107-107, Pfeiffer's Josiah Avington (Fredericksburg, Va.) knocked down a three-pointer with 1:36 left, giving the Falcons the 110-107 cushion.  After Pfeiffer went up 111-107, Greensboro's Greyson Collins hit a three-pointer to draw to 111-110.

Pfeiffer's Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) would cash in a free throw  with 13 seconds to play but on the ensuing Pride possession, they took the 113-112 lead on an Eric Peaks three-pointer.

After a Pfeiffer timeout with five seconds remaining, Riddley took the inbounds pass and rushed up the floor, driving to the basket when Greensboro's Carmoni Marks was whistled for the foul with one second on the clock.

Riddley calmly knocked both free throws down to make it 114-113. Greensboro did get a final desperation shot to win, but Keyford Langley's attempt fell short, preserving the Falcon win.

Riddley, the USA South scoring leader, finished with a game-high 33 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to secure the double-double.  Avington had a stellar night as well, hitting six three-pointers for 18 points.  Tyjarek Simmons (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) continued his great play, scoring 17 points while Sabb and Tristen Rodrigues (Gastonia, N.C.) finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

For the Pride, Phifer finished with 26 points while Marks had 24 in the loss. Collins would also finish withn18 points while Langley and Peaks finished with 17 and 14 points in the loss.

The Pfeiffer win improves the falcons to 8-7 on the season and 3-5 in USA South play while Greensboro falls to 2-14 and 1-7 in conference play.

Pfeiffer will take to the road this upcoming Saturday, travelling to East Division-leading N.C. Wesleyan.  Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
