Pfeiffer Men's Basketball Wins in Home Opener Over Roanoke, 72-62
Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 19, 2019) – The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team came back from a six-point deficit in the second half to earn a 72-62 nonconference win over visiting Roanoke College on Tuesday night at Merner Gym.
Trailing 43-37 with 14:34 to play, Pfeiffer put together a decisive 20-2 run over the next seven minutes to take the 57-45 lead after sophomore Tyjarek Simmons (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) converted a driving layup and free throw at the 6:52 mark while being fouled.
Roanoke then battled back, cutting the Pfeiffer lead to 57-52 on a pair of Caleb Jordan free throws with 4:37 remaining. That would be the closest that the Maroons would get, as Pfeiffer put together another run, this time a 12-3 spurt that make it 69-55 with 46 second to go. From there Pfeiffer went 3-of-4 from the foul like to provide the 72-62 final.
Pfeiffer shot 45.6% from the field on a 26-of-57 effort including a 7-of-24 (29.2%) showing from the three-point line. The Falcons were also shot a 72.2% clip (13-of-18) from the line in the win.
Roanoke managed a 46.9% outing on 23-of-49 shooting while hitting three from distance. The Maroons also had an identical 13-of-18 (72.2%) outing from the free throw line.
Pfeiffer did manage to coerce Roanoke into 28 turnovers which led to 34 Falcon points.
Sean Scott (Waldord, Md.) had the hot hand for Pfeiffer, scoring a game-high 17 points while pulling down four rebounds. He also added a steal and an assist. Teammate Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) just missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds.
The win evens the Falcons record to 2-2 on the season while Roanoke drops to 2-2.
