Avington Hits Game-Winner as Pfeiffer Wins Fourth-Consecutive Game With 98-96 Road OT Win at Bridgewater

Bridgewater, Va. (Nov. 23, 2019) –
Josiah Avington hit a driving layup withone second remaining to lift the Pfeiffer University men's basketball team to a 98-96 road overtime win at Bridgewater College on Saturday night.

Jamaal David (Clinton, Md.)
netted a game-high 27 points and had nine rebounds to lead the Falcons. Avington had 20 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists to go along with his game-winner. Tyjarek Simmons (Roanoke Rapids, N.C.) continued his solid play by going for 15 points while controlling four rebounds, adding a pair of assists and coming away with two steals in the win.

Rounding out the double-digit scoring for the Falcons was Sean Scott (Waldorf, Md.), as he had 12 points and four rebounds in the win.


First Half
Pfeiffer took its biggest lead of the game with five minutes left in the first half when an Avington 3-pointer made it 35-22. Bridgewater then closed the half with a 19-5 run to lead by a point at the break, 41-40.

Second Half
A three-pointer by Bridgewater's T.J. Turner put the Eagles up 77-69 with 7:53 left in the game, but the Falcons started chipping away at the lead and pulled even at 79-79 on a Craig Sabb (Goose Creek, S.C.) layup with 3:41 left.

Following another Bridgewater layup that pushed the Eagles lead to 81-79, Pfeiffer's Sean Scott tied the score with a driving layup for the Falcons with 2:15 on the clock. Scott was fouled on the play but missed the subsequent free throw. The Falcons came down with the offensive rebound and Jamaal David scored inside for an 83-81 lead with 1:59 left.

With 44 seconds left Scott scored again to put Pfeiffer 85-81.

Bridgewater's Will Bower then hit a pair of free throws to pull the Eagles to within two and Bridgewater came up with a defensive stop to gain possession. After a Pfeiffer foul, Bridgewater's Chandler Murray made two free throws with 5.8 second left to tie the score at 85-85.

Pfeiffer's Gabe Miller (Norfolk, Va.) had a chance to win it at the buzzer but his layup in traffic rolled off the rim, sending the game to overtime.

Bridgewater hit two foul shots with 1:42 left in overtime, giving the Eagles a 94-92 lead, but Simmons answered for the Falcons to knot the score at 94-94. Two free throws by David put the Falcons 96-94, but Turner drove the lane and scored off the glass to tie the score at 96-96 with 20 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing Pfeiffer possession, David found Avington on the right side and he drove to the basket, and got the game-winning layup to roll in with 0.6 seconds left.

Simmons then stole the quick inbounds pass from Bridgewater as the buzzer sounded to send Pfeiffer to its fourth-consecutive win.

Pfeiffer heads to Rock Hill, S.C. for an exhibition game against the Division I Winthrop Eagles.  Tipoff from the Winthrop Coliseum is set for 7:00 p.m.
