Softball Earns Split in Final Day of William Peace Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In the finale of the William Peace Tournament, the Pfeiffer softball team (5-1) earned a split. The Falcons dropped their opener to Maryville but rebounded to beat Eastern Mennonite.

The Falcons pitchers were a little too wild in the opener, walking 10 batters en route to an 11-2 loss in five innings. The big blow came off a grand slam from Christen Torres in an eight run third inning for the Scots. Maryville needed just three hits in the third to push across eight thanks to six walks in the frame.

Kiana Millsaps took the loss in the circle. The offensive bright spot came when Lindsay Powell launched her first career home run in the top of the 4th.

Millsaps rebounded in the circle in game two, tossing a complete game and allowing just three earned runs.

Pfeiffer needed just eight hits to push across their seven runs in the 7-5 victory. Vada Blue Sherrill went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Through her first six games of the season, the shortstop has 11 stolen bases and is hitting a scorching .619 with seven runs scored.

Chandler Walker went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI. Powell drove in a pair and Stephanie Fortner went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Despite the win, the Falcons were sloppy in the field. Pfeiffer committed four errors but still overcame those gaffes.

The Falcons return to action for their home opener on Tuesday afternoon. The Falcons will host Wesleyan (Ga.) at 2/4 p.m.
