MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced the 2018 All-State softball team and three Falcons were among the selections. Vada Blue Sherrill, Makenzie Pennell and Kiana Millsaps were all named to the First Team.
Sherrill, a junior from Hiddenite, N.C., was named First Team at shortstop after an outstanding campaign. Sherrill finished the season with a .508 batting average and went a perfect 56-for-56 in stolen bases. In her 42 games, Sherrill clubbed 16 home runs, drove in 69 runs and scored 64 times, all were program records. Additionally, Sherrill set the single-season team record for on-base percentage (.593) and slugging percentage (.992) to lead the Falcons to an ECAC Championship in their first year in Division III.
Pennell earned a First Team selection as a sophomore thanks to a .368 batting average. Pennell, who split time between third and second base this season, only struck out five times in 125 at-bats and hit seven home runs to go with 36 RBI's. Pennell got on base at a .450 clip and slugged .696 while scoring 43 runs in 42 games. For her career, Pennell owns a .383 batting average in her first two seasons.
Millsaps garnered a First Team selection thanks to a record-breaking season in the circle. Millsaps went 24-4 for the Falcons and shattered the program record for most wins in a season. She was the winning pitcher in both games of the ECAC Tournament and was named the ECAC Tournament MVP as she helped lead the Falcons to a championship. In addition to her pitching, she added 48 RBIs and a .379 batting average as a hitter.
Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and selected by the NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, the NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
