Pfeiffer Softball Splits With Averett
Misenheimer, N.C. (April 6, 2019) – The Pfeiffer University softball team hosted Averett on Saturday afternoon, splitting the USA South doubleheader, falling in game one by a 2-1 score and winning game two 8-7. Prior to game one, Pfeiffer honored seniors Kiana Millsaps and Vada Blue Sherrill, as they were playing in the final home games of their record-breaking Pfeiffer careers.
Pfeiffer – 29-5, 10-4 USA South
Averett – 22-11, 7-5 USA South
In game one, Pfeiffer surrendered a run in the first inning as Averett started the game with a leadoff double. The Cougar runner moved to third on a groundout and a Falcon error allowed the run to cross, providing the 1-0 lead for Averett.
Pfeiffer threatened in the third inning, loading the bases but stranded the runners.
Averett then jumped ahead 2-1 in the sixth following a leadoff single. After a groundout moved the runner to second, the Cougars got an RBI double to the left center gap from Anna Coleman.
Pfeiffer got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Reece Davis connected on a double to right center, with Kiana Millsaps scoring from first. Millsaps reached a batter earlier via a single to right center.
After holding Averett scoreless in the seventh, the Falcons threatened when Vada Blue Sherrill reached on a throwing error, but a double-play ended the game, with Averett claiming the 2-1 win.
In game two, Pfeiffer wasted little time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first off a Davis RBI single. Pfeiffer then went up 2-0 on a throwing error by the Cougar shortstop. Sara Brown the connected on an RBI double, making it 3-0.
Averett then made it 3-1 in the fourth inning as Zamiyiah Mangum doubled, driving in teammate Myka Patterson from first.
Pfeiffer got two more in the bottom of the fourth to extend the lead to 5-1 when Millsaps knocked in two runs with a single.
Averett then scored two in the top of the fifth to draw to 5-3, but the Falcons responded again, this time by putting up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to go up 8-3. Makenzie Pennell delivered an RBI single and Millsaps drove in a run on a squeeze play. The final Falcon run of the frame came when Kari Westerbeek roped an RBI single to left center.
Averett made it interesting in the top of the seventh, as they plated four runs to draw to within 8-7, but a Casey Cook pop up to second base ended the game, with Pfeiffer taking the 8-7 win.
Pfeiffer will next travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Wednesday, April 10 for a USA South doubleheader against William Peace. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the WPU Softball Field.
