Pfeiffer Softball Earns Third Seed in the 2019 ECAC Division III Tournament

Misenheimer, N.C. (May 6, 2019) –
The Pfeiffer University softball team will begin the task of defending their 2018 title as the Falcons have been tabbed the No. 3 overall seed in the 2019 ECAC Division III Softball Tournament.

First round games will be held on Wednesday, May 8 at campus sites with the semifinals and championship games to be held at Penn State-Behrend's campus Softball Complex in Erie, Pa.

Pfeiffer will start the defense of their ECAC Championship on Wednesday, May 8 as they travel to sixth-seeded Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio.  A start time has not yet been determined.

Franciscan enters the game with a 24-14 overall record after falling in the AMCC Tournament Championship game to Mt. Aloysius by a 5-1 score. The Barons finished 10-8 in AMCC play this season.

Franciscan has five players that hit above .300 this season, led by Allyson Weiss, who is hitting .397 on the year.  She leads the Barons in home runs with eight and also has driven in a team-best 36 RBI.  Teammate Jenny Massey is hitting .388 on the season and has driven in 20 RBI.

Sara Keating stands as the pitching leader for Franciscan, as she has compiled a 15-4 overall record while making 22 appearances, 16 of which were complete games.  She holds a 2.34 ERA and has three shutouts to her credit on the season and has allowed 139 hits and 42 earned runs in 125.2 innings pitched.

The Falcons completed the regular season with a 33-7 overall record, including an 11-5 mark in USA South play.  Of the 33 wins, 21 came by run-rule, as the Falcons outscored their opponents 372-110 this season.

Four players earned All-USA South honors, highlighted by senior shortstop Vada Blue Sherrill being tabbed the league Player of the Year. Junior second baseman Makenzie Pennell, catcher Sara Brown and pitcher Kiana Millsaps also earned league postseason honors.

Sherrill finished the regular season as the league leader in batting average (.500) while Pennell managed second with a .496 average.  Pennell also led the league in RBI with 63 while Sherrill had 56 on the season.  Millsaps managed a 1.99 ERA, good for second in the league standings, as she went 25-4 on the season, striking out 80 batters while issuing just 23 walks.

As a team, Pfeiffer dominated the USA South stats, leading the way in runs (372), hits (410), doubles (78), home runs (57), RBI (334), walks (160), batting average (.384), on-base percentage (.462) and slugging percentage (.632).  Pfeiffer also had a league-leading 2.03 team ERA and turned 23 double plays on the season.

Game 5 – No. 1 Penn State-Behrend vs. Game 2 winner – 1:00 p.m.
Game 6 – Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner – 3:00 p.m.

Championship – Sunday, May 12 – Penn State-Behrend– Erie, Pa.
Game 7 – Semifinal winners – 1:00 p.m.
