Falcon Women's Basketball Take 60-50 Win over Brevard

Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 23, 2019) –
Junior A'Mya McClain scored a game-high 25 points as the Pfeiffer University women's basketball team broke a four-game skid with a 60-50 nonconference win over Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Merner Gym.

Pfeiffer took the lead on a pair of McClain free throws less than a minute into the game and never trailed.  In the first quarter, both teams had their struggles from the field, with Brevard only making three field goals compared to the Falcons one.  Despite the poor shooting, Pfeiffer led 8-6 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the teams fared better, with Brevard hitting 5-of-16 from the field (31.3%) while the Falcons managed a 4-of-13 (30.8%) effort to lead 24-21 at halftime.

Brevard outscored Pfeiffer in the third quarter to draw to within 42-38.

The Tornados cut the Falcon lead to just one point on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter, with the latter coming at the 4:49 mark on a Taryn Ledford jumper that made it 48-47.  Pfeiffer's Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.) responded with a three-pointer on the next Falcon possession to push the lead to 51-47.  A jumper from McClain followed by a three-pointer extended Pfeiffer's lead to 56-47 at the 2:18 mark.

Brevard would hit a three-pointer with 1:19 left, but that would be their final basket as McClain would seal the game with four free throws down the stretch to provide the 60-50 final.

In addition to McClain's 25 points, senior Kortni Pinion (Stanfield, N.C.) finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Bentley had 11 points and brought down six rebounds while Johnaisha Watson (Winston-Salem, N.C.) played well inside by securing nine rebounds.

The win snaps a four-game skid for the Falcons and improves their record to 2-4 on the season while Brevard dips to 2-3 on the season.

Pfeiffer will next play on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Guilford College.
