Pfeiffer Volleyball Earns 3-2 Home Win Over Johnson & Wales

The Pfeiffer University volleyball team continued their winning ways as they downed visiting Johnson & Wales by a 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-27, 25-17, 15-13) score on Friday night in Merner Gym.

Pfeiffer extended their winning streak to three matches, all of which have been by 3-2 scores.  All told, the Falcons are 4-1 on the season when playing five sets.

In the first set, neither team could build a substantial lead, as the Wildcats and Falcons were not separated by more than two points until JWU tool the 24-21 lead.  Pfeiffer battled back, closing to 24-23 after a Wildcat error.  JWU then closed the set when Toniya Scott provided a kill to win the set 25-23.

Pfeiffer fought back in the second set, taking it by a 25-13 score.  Pfeiffer took a 9-6 lead after a JWU service error then went on a 6-3 spurt to extend the cushion to 15-9.  The Falcon lead would expand to 20-12 on a kill from freshman Reagan Wyatt (Stoneville, N.C.).  After a service error made it 20-13, The Falcons reeled off five straight points to close the set. Pfeiffer hit .333 in the frame and notched 14 kills while limiting JWU to just five kills and a negative hitting percentage

The third set would prove to be the most competitive when JWU claiming the 27-25 win to take the 2-1 lead.  In the set, they teams would battle through eight ties and would swap leads on five occasions.

In set four after being tied at 14-14, Pfeiffer would go on a 7-1 run to push the lead to 21-15 on a kill from sophomore setter Angelina Fardella (Harrisburg, N.C.).  Two consecutive kills from senior Bri Weber (Jesup, Iowa) closed the match, with Pfeiffer claiming the 25-17 win to draw even at 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, Pfeiffer again started fast, bolting to an 8-4 lead that they would not relinquish.  JWU did close to within 13-12, but kills from sophomore outside hitter Alonna Clouse (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Wyatt ended the set and the match, with the Falcons claiming the 15-13 win.

Wyatt led the way for the Falcons with 18 kills while Clouse added 15 in the win.  Freshman Mattie Burris (Misenheimer, N.C.) had 12 kills on the night while Weber and Fardella each contributed nine in the winning effort.  Fardella also dished 40 assists on the night while freshman Kaitlin Kilts (Madison, N.C.) had a team-best 18 digs.  Senior Lili Jaramillo (Oakboro, N.C.) and Clouse also played well defensively, amassing 15 and 13 digs, respectively.

With the win, Pfeiffer improves to 9-2 overall on the season, matching the win total from the 2018 season.  In addition, Pfeiffer improves their record inside Merner Gym to an impressive 7-1 on the season.

The Falcons will being USA South play on Saturday, Sept. 27 when they host Meredith and Greensboro for a tri-match starting at Noon.  The Falcons will take on the Angels at Noon and will follow up with a 4:00 p.m. match with The Pride.
