MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Pfeiffer University scored 20 runs pounding out 25 hits in a doubleheader softball sweep at Johnson C. Smith on Friday afternoon. The Lady Falcons tallied a 9-0 shutout in game one while rolling 11-1 in a shortened five inning game two. Pfeiffer improves to 4-8 on the year while the Golden Bulls fall to 0-6.
The scoring started very quickly as Melanie Conklin started her excellent day at the plate with a leadoff home run to right in the top of the first. Pfeiffer held that 1-0 lead until the sixth and seventh when four-run frames accounted for the final eight tallies.
In the sixth, Allison Braswell, who also pitched a gem in the opener, started with a double to left, later scoring on a Hannah Jackson single. Celia Dew then dropped down a bunt to score Sarah Waylock while Kirsten Patterson and Rachel LaBar picked up the final RBI in the sixth.
In the seventh, Conklin led off with a triple to right-center. Sam Taylor followed with an infield single while Patterson delivered the final blow with a two-run double to left-center. In the circle, Braswell tossed a complete game allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts.
In the five-inning nightcap, Pfeiffer put up two early in the first on a Braswell double down the left field line, while adding three in the second on RBI-singles from Conklin and Dew. After Johnson C. Smith scored in the third on a Kawehio Chan double, Pfeiffer closed it out with a half-dozen runs in the fifth. LaBar doubled to left for the first run while Conklin followed with a two-run double to left-center.
Shelby Brown scored the win tossing six frames allowing one run on six hits with nine strikeouts in the victory. Five Falcons had a pair of hits in the second contest capping off the offensive explosion.
Pfeiffer returns home on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. Conference Carolinas doubleheader with St. Andrews.
