Women's Volleyball Splits Day One of Pfeiffer Invitational; Earn First Win of 2012 against Winston-Salem State

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Pfeiffer University picked up its first win of the season splitting a pair of matches in day one of the 2012 Pfeiffer Invitational. The Lady Falcons swept Winston-Salem State 3-0 before being swept in the day's finale by Catawba. Pfeiffer stands at 1-5 on the year heading into day two tomorrow.

Pfeiffer 3, Winston-Salem State 0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-14)

The Lady Falcons picked up their first win of the season after a sweep of the Rams led by nine blocks on defense, six block assists from Anna Vizvary (North Augusta, SC). Milana Mervosh (Roebuck, SC) packed the offense with a half-dozen kills while Kelly Lancellot (Naples, FL) had five. Pfeiffer served up 17 aces, five from Lancellot, while also benefitting from 54 errors by the Rams.

Catawba 3, Pfeiffer 0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-16)

Catawba finished off the sweep winning the match's final 12 points to go from down 16-13 to a 25-16 victory. Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, VA) led the way with a match high 15 kills hitting .379 and Catawva hit .348 as a team. Lancellot and Mervosh each had seven kills for Pfeiffer.

Earlier in the day, Lenoir-Rhyne battled back from down two sets to knock off Queens 3-2 while the Royals would later bounce back to sweep Winston-Salem State 3-0. Day two of the Pfeiffer Invitational with crank up at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning with Winston-Salem State and Catawba kicking off the first of four more matches to round out the tournament.
