Gilbert's Six Goals Lead #10 Men's Lacrosse Past #11 Catawba 16-8 in Key Region Battle; Showdown with #1 Mercyhurst at Home on Saturday

SALISBURY, N.C. - Pfeiffer University, ranked #10 in the latest USILA Coaches poll, used a game-high six-goals and two assists from Elliot Gilbert in a 16-8 victory over host and 11th-ranked Catawba College in NCAA II men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon. The win keeps the Falcons unbeaten on the young season at 4-0 while the Indians suffer their first loss dropping to 2-1.

Gilbert started his afternoon with the game's first goal 1:16 into the first quarter before Catawba's Adam Hebert recorded the equalizer 2:20 later. Pfeiffer would close out the first quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead after the first 15 minutes. Gilbert would add two more in the period, including the final strike of the period with 23 seconds left, while Steven Tilmon and Robert Hope had the others for the Falcons.

In the second quarter, Catawba's Steven Ridolfo made it a 6-2 contest with 12:45 remaining in the half before the Falcons again jumped out on a 4-0 run for a 10-2 advantage on goals from Spencer Allen, James Shepherd, Mike Triolo and Cole Sheen. Catawba would register the two of the three final goals in the second quarter as Matt Symes struck with 2:47 to play in the period while Ridolfo hit in a man-up situation with 15 seconds remaining.

Gilbert would keep the pressure on with two more goals in the third period while Shepherd hit on another. John Scheich and Brendan Kennedy had the two strikes for Catawba in the third. Each team wrapped up the day with two goals in the fourth quarter as Allen and Gilbert collected their final tallies of the day while Ridolfo and Jon Williams finalized things for Catawba.

Pfeiffer outshot Catawba 42-36 in the win, 27-23 in shots on goal. Hayden Kirk would pick up his fourth-straight win making 15 saves for the Falcons.

The Falcons will look to move to 5-0 on Saturday hosting the #1 team in the country in Mercyhurst. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. at N.E. Lefko Field with live stats being available courtesy of http://www.gofalconsports.com.
