MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer men's basketball team (1-0) opened its 2014-15 season with a convincing 88-51 drubbing of Barber Scotia (1-5) on Monday night insider Merner Gymnasium. The Falcons shot 64 percent from the floor, including a scorching 71 percent in the first half, and held a dominating 53-25 advantage on the boards over the Sabers.
The Falcons were led by 20 points from Harvey McMurray who knocked down four of Pfeiffer's five three pointers. De'Vonte Jenkins added 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Mike Smith netted 15 points.
It was a tremendous effort on both ends of the floor for the Falcons as they held Barber Scotia to just 27.8 percent shooting and cleaned up the glass. The undermanned Sabers were led by 14 points from Walter Jackson and Rashad Green.
The game was tied at nine just six minutes into the contest before the Falcons found their groove. Pfeiffer used a 24-4 run over the next eight minutes to blow the lead open. The Falcons would go into the break with a 43-26 advantage as Smith led the way with 12 points. Pfeiffer missed just six shots in the opening 20 minutes, going 15-for-21 from the field and 3-for-4 from long range.
Pfeiffer scored 12 of the first 14 points to start the second half as the rout was on. Jenkins and McMurray combined for 27 second half points and went 11-for-19 from the field.ÂÂ
Nigel Jackson was efficient, scoring 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting, and grabbing eight rebounds. Silvere Aluko was a force on the defensive end of the court as the 6'10" center blocked five shots and grabbed six rebounds in his 22 minutes of work. Justin Finch added four blocks off the bench, including two in the final five seconds of the first half. Josh Calhoun finished the night with 11 points and seven assists and Keith Jumper had six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Pfeiffer will jump right into conference play on Wednesday evening as they host Mount Olive at 7:30 p.m. in the second game of a seven game homestand to open the season.ÂÂ
