WILSON, N.C. - Playing without two of their top three scorers, the Pfeiffer men's basketball team (4-5, 1-2 CC) fell under .500 with a 75-62 loss at Barton (6-3, 1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Andrew Guerrero did all he could to keep the Falcons close as the junior dropped a game-high 27 points in the losing effort.
The Falcons lost AJ Clark in the fifth game of the year and were also forced to play without Mike Smith today. The Bulldogs proved to be too much as Dominique Boyd dominated Pfeiffer en route to a double-double with 16 points and 18 rebounds. Daniel Westbrook came one rebound shy of a double-dboule for Barton as he poured in 13 points and grabbed nine boards.
Guerrero accounted for half of his team's points in the first half as the Bulldogs took a 40-27 lead into the locker room despite Guerrero's 14 points. The Falcons trailed by as much as 17 in the second half but cut the deficit to 52-49 with 9:34 remaining. However, a late surge by Barton put the game out of reach.
Josh Calhoun added 11 points and four steals and De'Vonte Jenkins finished with 10 points.
Both teams shot 38 percent from the field in the contest but Barton dominated the glass, outrebounding the Falcons 53-33. The Bulldogs turned 23 offensive rebounds into 23 second chance points and the Barton bench outscored Pfeiffer 26-10.
Guerrero's 27 points come after he poured in 31 against Lees-McRae a week ago. Guerrero is averaging 17.8 points per game and is hitting 50 percent of his three point attempts. He is currently fourth in Conference Carolinas in points per game and third in three point percentage.
The Falcons return to action on Tuesday evening as they host Bluefield St. inside Merner Gym at 7:00 p.m.
