Box Score

SALISBURY, N.C. - The No. 11 Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (9-3) overcame a 10-7 deficit in the fourth quarter but dropped a 12-11 overtime heartbreaker to Catawba (4-8) on Tuesday evening. Connor Kennedy scored on the man advantage just 22 seconds into the extra period to stun the Falcons. Each of Pfeiffer's three losses on the season have come by one goal in non-conference play.

Cole Sheen led Pfeiffer with three goals and Eddie Renaud and Kyle Pauwels each added two scores. Pfeiffer held a 45-32 advantage in shots but Catawba dominated the faceoff stripe, winning 21-of-26 draws.

Catawba committed 19 turnovers, compared to just five by the Falcons. Pfeiffer was a perfect 21-for-21 in clears as they dropped their first game since a March 7 loss at No. 9 Seton Hill.

Tucker Hammock got the scoring started with 7:50 left in the first quarter. Renaud and Derek Thomas added first period scores as the teams would play to a 3-3 draw in the first 15 minutes of action.

Catawba took the upper hand with five consecutive scores in a 5:23 span to start the second quarter. Trailing 8-3, Pfeiffer's Cole Paciejewski and Sheen cut the deficit to 8-5 heading into the half.

Catawba's Zach LaFavre scored his 20th goal of the year to put the hosts up 9-5 but Pfeiffer's Pauwels had a quick answer. The freshman scored back-to-back goals, one with the man advantage, to make the score 9-7 with 9:55 left in the quarter. At the 2:06 mark, the Indians scored the last goal of the quarter to extend the lead to 10-7.

Pfeiffer found an extra gear to start the fourth quarter as Sheen scored twice and Matt Michaeli capped off the four goal barrage in just 6:16 of game action as Pfeiffer took the 11-10 lead with 7:10 left in regulation. Dalton Cook scored an unassisted goal out of a Catawba timeout to knot the game at 11. With just 36 seconds to go, Pfeiffer turned the ball over and at the 27 second mark, Hammock was whistled for a one minute conduct foul. Catawba held the ball to end the fourth quarter, ensuring they would have possession and the extra man to start overtime.

Cook fired a shot wide nine seconds into the extra frame before he assisted on Kennedy's game winner, beating Pfeiffer's goalie Michael Moorehead to seal the upset victory.

Kevin Kerrick and David Lehman led the Falcons with three ground balls in the contest. Renaud and Sheen combined for 20 of Pfeiffer's 45 shots on the night and Lehman added three caused turnovers.

Each team went 3-for-4 with the extra man. Pfeiffer entered play third in the nation, converting at a .500 clip with the man advantage.

The Falcons look to shake off the loss as they attempt to stay unbeaten in conference play on Saturday afternoon. Pfeiffer travels to North Greenville for a 1 p.m. match.
