Jenkins Scores a Career-High but Falcons Falter Against Barton

Box Score

Jeremy Zalacca - Director of Athletic Communications

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - De'Vonte Jenkins poured in a career-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting but the Pfeiffer men's basketball team (8-9, 4-5 CC) let a late lead slip away in a tough 106-103 loss to Barton (13-5, 8-2) on Tuesday night. Pfeiffer went 38-for-44 (86.4 percent) from the free throw line in the contest as the teams were whistled for a combined 54 fouls.

Jenkins set his career-high despite playing in just 17 minutes. Mike Smith came off the bench to pour in 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting. Barton was led by 25 points from Jake Veasley and 19 points by Dominque Byrd.

The Bulldogs helped their own cause at the charity stripe as well, converting on 33-of-43 attempts. The two teams would combine to attempt 87 free throws on the night.

Jenkins scored 20 of his first 28 points in the opening half but a bucket by Barton's Ryan Canoy with 19 seconds left sent Barton into the break with a slight 51-49 advantage. The Falcons wasted little time grabbing the advantage as they opened the second half on a 6-0 spurt.

At the midway point of the second half, Pfeiffer held an 85-75 edge and were firing on all cylinders. Barton would claw back into the contest and evened the game at 95 with 2:21 to play. A pair of free throws from Byrd, who went 15-for-18 from the line on the night, gave Barton a 100-99 lead with just 1:17 left. Smith had the answer for the Falcons as the junior converted a three point play to put Pfeiffer up two at the 1:04 mark. With 27 seconds to go, Byrd went 1-of-2 from the line and Pfeiffer had the ball with a 102-101 lead. However, the Falcons turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Veasley hit a layup that gave Barton a one point lead with 20 seconds left. Smith was fouled on the next offensive possession and hit one free throw to tie the game. With just three seconds left, Matt Woods hit the game winner to give Barton the season sweep over the Falcons on the year.

Josh Calhoun scored 18 points for Pfeiffer and Silvere Aluko added 14 points as Pfeiffer's 103 points were the second highest scoring total on the season.

The 38 free throw makes was just three shy of the all-time record of 41 makes in a game set in 1956.

Tonight's contest concluded a seven game home stand for the Falcons. Up next, Pfeiffer hits the road for a matchup at Erskine on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. to start a four game road swing.
