Falcons Leave Limestone With A Split

GAFFNEY, S.C. – In a battle between the third place Pfeiffer University (24-14, 10-4 CC) softball team and second place Limestone (19-10, 6-1 CC), the Falcons and Saints split a pair of 3-2 games at Babe Ruth Field on Saturday afternoon. In game two , strong pitching by Sam Jarmusch kept the Falcons in the ballgame as the redshirt senior picked up her sixth win of the season as she pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and two earned runs.

With one out in the top of the second, Pfeiffer picked up a run to go up 1-0 as Vada Blue Sherrill reached on a throwing by Saints shortstop Tessa Faucette consequently bringing in third base runner Jessica Jackson.

The scored remained locked at 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Caroline Hill hit Jarmusch's pitch over the centerfield fence, scoring Sam Thornton as well.

The Falcons answered right back  in the top of the seventh inning as pinch hitter Stephanie Fortner and Sherrill were issued back to back walks with one out. Next batter, Rachel Crowder reached second base on a fielding error by second baseman Thornton, bringing in Fortner to tie the score at two runs apiece. The following batter Kiana Millsaps hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Sherrill to score the go ahead and winning run.

Jarmusch retired the Saints in order in the bottom of the seventh for the Falcons 24th victory on the year.

In game one, bottom one, the Saints started a two out rally as Caroline Hill singled up the middle, next batter Emma Swearington reached on an error by second baseman Emma Tuttle, allowing Hill to move to second. Catcher Erika Hansen took Falcon Syndey Poole's pitch down the left field line, scoring both Hill and Swearington.

Pfeiffer answered right back as Jessica Jackson singled to shortstop Tessa Faucette with one out. Jaclyn Boever hit Saints' starter Courtney Smith offering down the left field line to tie the score at two.

Limestone took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Hill hit Poole's pitch over the center field fence.

The Falcons had one last opportunity in the top of the seventh as pinch hitter, Fortner walked, giving way to Vanessa Hoffman. Next batter, Sherill popped up to the third base. Coach Monte Sherrill got aggressive with one out sending Hoffman, but got caught stealing.

Pfeiffer returns to play on April 9th as they host Lees-McRae on April 9th for Senior Day. Scheduled time is 2:00 p.m.
