CHAMPS: Softball Wins Second Conference Carolinas Tournament Title in History

Box Score

Jeremy Zalacca - Director of Athletic Communications

BURLINGTON, N.C. - For just the second time in school history, the Pfeiffer softball team (37-15) won the Conference Carolinas Tournament as they outlasted top-seeded Limestone (34-16) for a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon. The win automatically qualifies the Falcons for the 2016 NCAA Tournament as Pfeiffer went a perfect 4-0 in the double elimination tournament.

Freshman pitcher Callie Kuykendall was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player as she went 4-0 on the mound in the tournament. The rookie entered the conference tournament with five wins on the season and nearly doubled that total in two days. In the championship, Kuykendall tossed a complete game and struck out four batters.

Jessica Jackson was the offensive force that lifted the Falcons to the title as the senior third basemen crushed two solo home runs and reached base safely all four times on the day. In fact, Limestone was so cautious of Jackson that they intentionally walked her in her final at bat in the game.

The Falcons struck first in the top of the third as Vada Blue Sherrill came around to score on a base hit by Kiana Millsaps with two outs. Jackson hit her first solo blast in the fourth and then struck again in the sixth to put the Falcons up three. Sherrill drove in Stephanie Fortner with an infield single later in the sixth as Pfeiffer jumped ahead 4-0.

However, the Saints would claw back with three runs of Kuykendall in bottom of the six to cut the lead to 4-3. The Falcons put two runners on in the top of the seventh but couldn't cash in an insurance run as Limestone took its final at bat. After walking the leadoff hitter, Kuykendall got two consecutive outs. Emma Swearingen singled for Limestone, moving the tying run to scoring position buy Kuykendall got Erika Hansen to fly out to center field and start the victory celebration.

Vada Blue Sherrill, Jackson and Fortner were named to the All-Tournament team following the game as Pfeiffer took home its first tournament title since 2008.

Pfeiffer will find out its NCAA Tournament draw on Monday morning as the NCAA DII Softball selection show is scheduled to air on NCAA.com at 10 a.m. (ET). Click here to watch the selection show on Monday.
