DANVILLE, VA – In their last tri-match of the season on Friday night, the Pfeiffer Falcons (3-21) dropped a pair of matches to N.C. Wesleyan (30-3) and Averett (9-12 ). Offensively, Erin Errington led the Falcons on the night with a kill of 17 kills and Katie Anne Wilson had 30 assists and on the defensive side Emma Gray Beacham added 25 digs.
In the first match of the day, Pfeiffer fell in set one, but came back to win set two by the score of 25-20. With the Falcons down, 7-5, Kaylee Freed started off a 7-0 run with a kill. Fellow freshman Madison Kuehl added another and Bri Webber had two.
Later in set two saw the Falcons score three consecutive points as another Pfeiffer freshman, Lea Hilton and Freed connected on kills. Pfeiffer was able close out set two behind senior Erin Errington's two kills.
The Falcons were unable hold that momentum going into set three as they lost 25-11, but in set four it looked like Pfeiffer turned it around as they took an early 3-0 lead. The Battling Bishops Sam Morton helped the Pfeiffer cause with her two attack errors. After the initial run, N.C. Wesleyan countered with five consecutive points of their own, as three different players had kills. Pfeiffer continued to hang in the set, but again the Bishops scored six consecutive. That run secured a 20-12 lead and eventually the match, 25-19.
Pfeiffer was led by Errington's second consecutive double digit kill match with 11 kills. Wilson had a team-high 17 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, four Falcons had double digit dig games. Emma Gray Beacham had 17, Webber added 14, Abby Kaufhold had 12 and Errington chipped in with 10.
Match two saw the Falcons fall behind early, 5-3 in set one, but were able to win four consecutive points as the Cougars were forced into three straight errors. Hilton was able to cap off the run with a kill as Pfeifer took a 7-5 lead.
Later in set one, Averett was able to pull away from the Falcons, 13-10 and yet again the young Pfeiffer team was able to rally to tie the score. Madison Kuehl connected on a kill and again the Falcons forced the Cougars into two more offensive errors. That was the last time Pfeiffer was close as the home team started to pull away. Averett went onto win set one, 25-18. Pfeiffer was out hit in set one, .419 to .083.
Pfeiffer in set two again was able to match the Cougars point for point as Kuehl connected on two kills but the Falcons were down 6-5. The Cougars were able to pull away from the Pfeiffer as they scored the next five points. Averett's middle hitter Williams scored three of those points on a kill and two consecutive service aces. As that rally concluded, Pfeiffer was unable to comeback in the set and in the match. The Cougars went on to win the set, 25-14 and win set three 25-13 for their 30th win of the season.
In the match, Kuehl had five kills and with a hitting percentage of .273. Katie Anne Wilson had a team-high 13 assists and Emma Gray Beacham had a team-high eight digs.
The Cougars were led by Keenan Marks 20 assists.
Pfeiffer returns to action for their last match of the year as they host the Regent Royals on Wednesday, October 1st at 7 p.m.
