MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Thanks to a 33-point outburst from Andrew Guerrero, the Pfeiffer men's basketball team (21-3, 14-3 CC) ran its winning streak to nine straight with a 97-81 defeat of Barton (16-7, 11-4) on Tuesday night. In the victory, junior guard Josh Calhoun became the 35th player in Pfeiffer history to record 1,000 career points.
Guerrero was on fire for the Falcons, shooting 10-for-15 from the field and 9-of-12 from long range. Guerrero was just one three pointer shy of tying the program record for most made threes as Pfeiffer swept the regular season series from Barton and remained within one game of Limestone for first place in the conference standings.
Each member of the starting five scored in double digits on the night and senior Keith Jumper notched his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Mike Smith finished with 17 points and A.J. Clark added 14 points, seven assists and three steals.
Calhoun needed just nine points in the game to reach 1,000 for his career and recorded the historic bucket with just 35 seconds left in the game as he finished with 10 points. Calhoun joins teammates Guerrero, Clark and Smith to give Pfeiffer four active 1,000 point scorers.
With Smith's 17 points, he moves into eighth all time with 1,623 points, joining Clark (1,753, 6th all-time) as one of the most prolific scoring duos in program history.
Pfeiffer led for the majority of the contest and had a lead as large as 19. The Falcons shot 46.8 percent from the field and knocked down 14 3-pointers. Pfeiffer only turned the ball over nine times in the game and forced Barton into 22 turnovers, which Pfeiffer turned into 27 points.
Barton shot 44.3 percent from the floor but only 33.3 percent from three point land. The Bulldogs held a 49-40 advantage on the boards in the losing effort. Daniel Westbrook led the visitors with 20 points and 14 rebounds and R.J. Claypool added 17 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.
The 21st win of the season for Pfeiffer equals the total from the 2007-08 season. With one more win, Pfeiffer will have its highest win total in a season since winning 27 in 2004-05. The Falcons also run their record to a perfect 12-0 in Merner Gym on the season.
Pfeiffer concludes non-conference play on Thursday with a trip to Columbia International. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
