Moorehead's 18 Saves Help Lead Falcons Past Methodist

Box Score

Jeremy Zalacca - Director of Athletic Communications

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (7-6) held on for 11-10 victory at N.E. Lefko Field on Tuesday night over future conference opponent Methodist (11-3). Mike Moorehead made 18 saves in goal, many in clutch situations, to lead the Falcons to victory.

Methodist, who competes in the USA South, had a two-man advantage in the final moments of the game but Moorehead's strong play, coupled with stellar man down defense, killed the penalties and gave Pfeiffer a one goal win. Dillon Malloy caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball as time expired and Pfeiffer pulled out the non-conference win to move a game over .500.

Pfeiffer scored five times in the fourth quarter, with Kyle Barna accounting for three of those goals. Barna and teammate Myles Dalton-Steinhart each netted hat tricks for the Falcons and Ryan Cummings added two goals.

A game after breaking the single season record for ground balls, Cody Lamond added five more to his ledger, giving him 119. Malloy finished with four caused turnovers and Pfeiffer held the Monarchs without a goal on four man advantage opportunities.

Methodist held a 52-35 advantage in shots but Moorehead was up to the task. The Monarchs won 14 of 25 faceoffs and held a slim 38-36 advantage in ground balls.

The visitors were led by two goals apiece from Jay Robinson and Jake Smerka.

Pfeiffer held Methodist scoreless for the first 16 minutes of action before the guests finally broke through. Despite facing a pair of three goal deficits, the Monarchs would rally back and take a 9-7 lead with 9:43 to play.

However, Pfeiffer would score four straight and held off a late flurry to secure their seventh victory of the season and fifth in their last six games.

The win guarantees Pfeiffer a winning record at home (4-3) during the regular season. The Falcons will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to North Greenville for a 1 p.m. game.
