Pfeiffer Softball Uses 11-Run Inning to Sweep Averett

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANVILLE, VA – The Pfeiffer softball team (11-1) had little trouble dispatching Averett (4-10) on Sunday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader by scores of 8-0 and 14-4. Both games only went five innings as the run-rule came into effect.

In game one, Pfeiffer scored two runs in each of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. In the second, Sara Brown drove in a run with an RBI groundout and Bailey Sherrill reached on a fielder's choice to plate Stephanie Fortner.

Kiana Millsaps and Fortner each had RBI singles in the third and Millsaps crushed a 2-run homer to left center in the fourth.

In the fifth, Brown and Sherrill again recorded RBI's to embark the mercy rule.

Millsaps improved to 9-1 in the circle by tossing five shutout innings and allowing just four hits while striking out two.

Pennell went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and scored twice. Fortner and Chandler Walker each stole two bases while Walker went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In game two, Pfeifer erupted for 11 runs in the top of the second to put away the Cougars. In the inning, Pfeiffer had eight hits. Amanda Sports opened the rally with a walk. After a pair of Falcons reached, Bailey Sherrill singled to score Sports. Kari Westerbeek had a pinch-hit single and then Vada Blue Sherrill crushed a grand slam. Three more Falcons reached base before Sports drove in Walker with an RBI single. Fortner struck out and ended a string of 10 straight batters reaching base safely. Brown and Bailey Sherrill had back-to-back RBI singles that plated a total of three runs. The last run would cross on a fielder's choice by Vada Blue.

Vada Blue went 2-for-4 with two runs and five runs driven in and her sister Bailey finished 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.

Kennedy Lester went to 2-0 in the circle by allowing just two earned runs in five innings of work.

The Falcons, who have won seven straight, return to action tomorrow when they travel to Roanoke. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
