Box Score Three Score in Double Figures as Pfeiffer Women Win 65-57 at Methodist
Fayetteville, N.C. (Jan. 9, 2020) – Three Falcons players scored in double-figures to go along with a tremendous defensive effort as Pfeiffer University took a 65-57 USA South road win at Methodist University on Wednesday night at the Riddle Center in Fayetteville, N.C.
Pfeiffer's Kortni Pinion (Stanfield, N.C.) secured her fourth double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 23 points on a 10-of-18 mark from the field while bringing down 11 rebounds, also a team-high. Teammate A'Mya McClain (Hickory, N.C.) continued her steady play, as she had 15 points on the night. Rounding out the double-digit scorer's was Brina Bentley (Chester, Va.), as she had 11 points.
As a team, Pfeiffer managed a 44.6% effort from the field (25-of-56) while holding Methodist to just a 28.8% mark (17-of-59). Pfeiffer also coerced the Monarchs into 23 turnovers, which led to 21 Falcon points.
The first quarter started with the Falcons jumping to a quick 4-0 lead, but Methodist went on a 5-0 spurt to take a 5-4 lead with a three point at the 5:50 mark. From that point, Pfeiffer went on a 7-3 run to take the 11-7 lead after the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the teams traded baskets, with Pfeiffer eventually able to go into the halftime break leading 29-24.
The Falcons then used a big third quarter, outscoring the host Monarchs 22-11. The key stretch came in the form of a 9-2 run the bolstered the Pfeiffer lead to 38-26, capped by a three-pointer by Regan Allen (Olin, N.C.) at the 7:29 mark. After a pair of Methodist free throws, Pinion and McClain had back-to-back baskets, pushing Pfeiffer's lead to 42-31 with 5:34 left in the quarter. Pfeiffer went on another run to close the quarter, leading 51-35.
The fourth quarter saw the Falcons take their biggest lead of the game with 8:56 left following a layup from Pinion, which made it 53-35. Methodist did cut the lead to nine points (63-54) with 1:25 left with the Falcons firmly in control. A late Methodist free throw provided the eventual 65-57 final.
Pfeiffer improves to 6-6 on the season and 3-1 in USA South play while Methodist dips to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in league play.
The Falcons will return home this weekend for a pair of games, taking on Greensboro College on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a 4:00 p.m. game with N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday, Jan. 12.
