Pfeiffer Women Falls to Southern Virginia 69-64

Misenheimer, N.C. (January 29, 2022) – The Pfeiffer Women's Basketball team fell to USA South East division leaders Southern Virginia on Saturday, 69-64.

Despite the loss freshman guard Tanaeshea Ellison continued to play well as she poured in 19 points, shooting 54% from the field. The 19 points was a season high for Ellison and her third game in a row reaching double figures.

Joining Ellison in double figures was senior Mya Johnson who chipped in 10 points while capturing 8 rebounds. Freshman guard Alexis Bynum also contributed 10 points while shooting 5-6 from the free throw line.

The Knights (14-3, 10-0 USA South) winners of 11 straight games, had three players reach double-digit scoring. Katie Garrish led the team with a game high 18 points. Courtney McKrola earned a double-double adding 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Savannah Christensen also added a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

In the first quarter, the Falcons would close the final two minutes on a 5-0 run to tie the score at 13-13. The Knights would turn up the defense in the second quarter and limit Pfeiffer to 10 points as they pushed the lead to 7 points at the half.

In the third quarter Southern Virginia would see the lead grow to 14 points before the Falcons would cut it to 11. Pfeiffer would come out strong in the 4th quarter outscoring the Knights 16-6 in the first six minutes to cut the lead to one point, 59-58.

Pfeiffer would keep it close over the final minutes, but Southern Virginia would go 4-4 from the free throw line in the last 13 seconds to hang on to the win.

For the game, the Falcons shot 33 percent from the field and 26 percent from the 3-point line. Despite the size advantage for the Knights, the Falcons were able to pull in 13 offensive rebounds that lead to 9 second chance points. The Falcons full court pressure was able to force 24 turnovers.

The two teams will meet again Monday night, January 31st, as Pfeiffer will travel to Southern Virginia in a game that was originally scheduled for January 8th. The game will tip-off at 5:00 p.m.
