Late Three Pointer Lifts Methodist Over Pfeiffer, 82-80
Fayetteville, N.C. (Feb. 17, 2022) – Methodist University hit a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to take an 82-80 men's basketball win over Pfeiffer University at the Riddle Center on Thursday night.
Pfeiffer fought back from being down by as many as 11 points (43-32) in the first half to trail by just two points (45-43) at halftime thanks to a late
Taylan Rowe (Oakboro, N.C.) three-pointer nine seconds before the halftime horn.
In the second half, it stay close throughout, with Methodist holding a six point lead on several occasions, the latter coming following a Dante Burden layup at the 4:21 mark, making it 74-68.
Pfeiffer would trim the lead to one point on three separate occasions and would eventually take the 82-81 lead on a pair of
Dorian Miles (Greenville, S.C.) free throws with 28 seconds left.
Following a Methodist timeout, the Monarchs missed a layup opportunity but regained the rebound and Clayton Coe hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to provide the 84-82 final, second Pfeiffer to their second-straight defeat.
Rowe led Pfeiffer with 20 points, hitting six from distance in the loss. Miles would finish with 18 points and teammate
Jerome Savoy (Waldorf, Md.) would chip in 13 points. Senior
D.J. Bradsher (Burlington, N.C.) would round out the double-figure scorers for Pfeiffer, finishing with 10 points.Â
E.J. Thomas (Charlotte, N.C.) would lead Pfeiffer with 10 rebounds in the loss.
Methodist's Dante Burden had a stellar night, scoring 37 points in the win while the hero Clayton Coe finished with 17. Kevin McLaughlin, Jr. had 13 points to round out the scoring for the Monarchs.
The loss drops Pfeiffer to 11-10 overall and 8-5 in league play while Methodist now stands at 3-20 and 2-11 in conference play.
Pfeiffer will conclude the regular season with a road trip to Mary Baldwin on Saturday, Feb. 19. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
