Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 18, 2023) --The Pfeiffer women's basketball team had 14 fewer turnovers than Meredith in a 70-42 win over the Angels in Merner Gym on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (2-1, 1-0 USA South) had four players score in double figures, led by Alexis Bynum, who had 15 points, six assists and three steals. Mackenzie Sand-Odom added 11 points and two steals off of the bench and Hannah Isley helped out with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Isley pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Pfeiffer, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 11 second chance points.
The Pfeiffer defense caused its share of Meredith miscues in Saturday's game, forcing 30 turnovers while committing just 16. Those takeaways turned into 29 points on the other end of the floor. Mara Ochoa-Contreras led the way individually for the Falcons with six steals.
How It Happened
After playing to an 8-8 tie early in the game, Pfeiffer went on a 10-0 run with 4:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Peyton McPeters, to take an 18-8 lead. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 24-15 advantage. Pfeiffer got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for nine of its 24 total points.
Pfeiffer kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 7:36 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Miya Horton, to increase its lead to 31-20. The Angels cut into that lead, but the Falcons still enjoyed a 34-28 advantage heading into halftime. Pfeiffer dominated in the paint, scoring six of its 10 points close to the basket.
Pfeiffer continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 16-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bynum, to expand its lead further to 50-30 with 2:01 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Angels had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Falcons still entered the fourth quarter with a 52-33 edge. Pfeiffer took advantage of seven Meredith turnovers in the quarter, scoring seven points off of takeaways.
Pfeiffer kept widening that lead, expanding it to 59-39 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 64-39 with 4:55 to go in the contest. The Falcons kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 70-42 win. Pfeiffer took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
