Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 8, 2023) --The Pfeiffer University women's basketball team went into the halftime break tied with visting Regent Universty at 32-32, but took control in the second half to take the 70-66 nonconference win on Wednesday night in Merner Gym.
The Falcons (1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by junior Alexis Bynum, who had 16 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore Hannah Isley tacked on 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals while freshman Lola Cabiness-Ali chipped in as well with a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Led by Cabiness-Ali's 11 offensive rebounds, Pfeiffer did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 28 boards that resulted in 24 second chance points.
The Pfeiffer defense was a problem in Wednesday's game, in forcing 19 Regent turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 28 points on the offensive end of the floor. Isley's three steals led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-7, Pfeiffer went on a 5-0 run with 4:36 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Bynum, to narrow its deficit to 13-12. answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Falcons down 16-12 entering the second quarter.
Pfeiffer kept the from increasing their lead before going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Cabiness-Ali, to take a 27-25 lead. The then battled back to even it up at 32-32 heading into halftime. Pfeiffer dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 20 points close to the basket.
Pfeiffer started the third quarter on a high note, going on an 8-0 run to grab a 40-32 lead with 7:25 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Falcons added five points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 60-47 edge. Pfeiffer took advantage of 10 turnovers in the quarter, scoring 20 points off of takeaways.
The Falcons then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Pfeiffer took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its 10 points in the paint.
