Misenheimer, N.C. (Nov. 9, 2023) --The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team got a 43-point showing from the bench on the way to a 67-62 come-from-behind win over the Averett Cougars in Merner Gym on Thursday night.
The Falcons (1-0) had two players score in double figures, led by junior Alex Cunningham, who had 17 points. Sophomore guard Ty Black added 12 points off the bench and junior Clayton Robinson added eight points and five assists.
Junior Daniel Fulp pulled down three offensive rebounds to pace the Pfeiffer offense which grabbed 13 boards and turned them into 10 second chance points.
Pfeiffer forced 15 Averett turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Thursday's game. The Falcons turned those takeaways into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jaylen Hamilton led the way individually with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-6, Pfeiffer went on a 6-0 run with 15:07 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Black, to take a 12-10 lead. The Falcons then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 33-28.
Averett kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 49-35 advantage before Pfeiffer went on a 16-0 run, finished off by Black's three, to seize a 51-49 lead with 9:55 to go in the contest. The Falcons kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 67-62 win. Pfeiffer shot well from three-point range in the half, hitting eight shots from deep to score 24 of its 39 points.
