NCWU Wins 11-4 Over Pfeiffer Baseball
Misenheimer, N.C. (March 19, 2023) – Visiting N.C. Wesleyan downed the Pfeiffer University baseball team 11-7 to sweep the three-game USA South series on Sunday afternoon at a sunny but chilly Joe Ferebee Field.
The Basics
Pfeiffer wasted no time in jumping on the visiting Bishops, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Falcons manufactured a run in the frame after a
Jake Brown (Winston-Salem, N.C.) grounder that drove in
Cory Lackey (Wilkesboro, N.C.). Later in the inning,
Christian Ezzell singled to right field to drive in senior
Zach Ferrell (Apex, N.C.).
The lead was short-lived, as NCWU scored a run in the second inning and tied the game in the third inning on an RBI double from Jaiden Barker.
A homer from NCWU's Tyson Bass gave the Bishops the 3-2 lead in the fourth and a sacrifice fly from Barker in the fifth inning pushed their lead to 4-2.
Jackson Leck (High Point, N.C.) delivered a two-run double to knot the game at 4-4 in the sixth inning, but N.C. Wesleyan responded with a pair of runs in the sixth inning on a two-run home run from designated hitter Zach Lyon to reclaim the 6-4 lead.
In the Pfeiffer sixth, Ferrell delivered a sacrifice fly that drove in
Austin Wood, cutting the lead to 6-5.
The Bishops then put the game out of reach in the eighth inning by plating four runs to take the 10-5 lead.
Pfeiffer's
Christian Ezzell then hit a two-run homer in the home half of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 10-7, but NCWU added another run in the ninth and shut the Falcons down in order in the bottom of the ninth to take the 11-7 win.
