Pfeiffer Baseball Drops USA South Opening Twin Bill to NCWU

Pfeiffer Baseball Drops USA South Opening Twin Bill to NCWU

Misenheimer, N.C. (March 18, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University baseball team dropped both ends of a Saturday USA South doubleheader to visiting N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field.

The Basics – Game 1
The visiting Bishops wasted little time as Jackson Hobbs belted a two-run homer in the first inning to go up 2-0.  In the third inning the NCWU lead grew to 3-0 on an RBI single by Drifton Padgett.  Another RBI from Hobbs on a single in the fourth inning extended the lead to 4-0.

Pfeiffer then responded in the fifth inning, plating 11 runs to grab to 11-4 lead.  Cory Lackey (Wilkesboro, N.C.) started off with a solo homer to left field, his first of the season to make it 4-1.  A wild pitch then allowed Zach Ferrell (Apex, N.C.) to score from third trimmed the NCWU lead to 4-2.

A bases-loaded walk to Alec Bell forced the next Falcon run across, followed by a hit batter drew the Falcons even at 4-4.   Thomas Ashby would put Pfeiffer up 6-4 with an RBI single.

Another run was scored when Lackey was hit by a pitch, bringing the score to 7-4.  A bases-clearing double from Ferrell then put Pfeiffer up 10-4.  Jake Brown would then collect an RBI single down the right field line to put the Falcons up 11-4.

NCWU responded in the sixth inning, scoring five runs to draw to 11-9.  The big hit for the Bishops came from Zach Lyon, as he hit a two-run homer to left field in the frame.

Pfeiffer's Lackey hit an RBI single in the sixth to add to the Pfeiffer lead (12-9), but NCWU got that run back in the seventh inning on an RBI double.

A seventh-inning groundout from Alec Bell pushed another run across for Pfeiffer to make it 13-10, but NCWU scored twice on a Falcon error to draw to 13-12 in the eighth inning.  The Falcons once against responded in the eighth with an RBI single from Brady Parker to push the lead back to 14-12.

NCWU then plated four runs in the top of the ninth to go up 16-14.  Pfeiffer was able to get runners on first and second base in the ninth but a fielder's choice to second base ended the wild back-and-forth affair with a 16-14 NCWU win.

The Basics – Game 2
The Bishops jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on a Jackson Hobbs two-run homer and a Jaiden Barker RBI single in the first inning followed by an RBI groundout and another RBI on a single from Hobbs in the second inning.

Pfeiffer scored single runs in the second and third inning, with Austin Wood delivering an RBI groundout in the second followed by a Jake Brown groundout in the third.

NCWU manufactured a run on a groundout in the fifth and benefitted on a Pfeiffer throwing error to go up 7-2.

A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch allowed Pfeiffer to score once more in the sixth inning to draw to 7-3, but NCWU got that run back in the eight with an RBI single from Zach Lyon to provide the eventual 8-3 final.
