Pfeiffer Baseball Splits USA South Games With Greensboro
High Point, N.C. (April 10, 2023) – The Pfeiffer University baseball team split a USA South doubleheader with rival Greensboro on Monday afternoon at Truist Point in High Point, N.C.
Game one was the completion of the game that was suspended on Thursday, April 6 by rain and thunderstorms.
Before the suspension of play, the Falcons jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second after sophomore
Josh Turner (Greensboro, N.C.) scored on a Greensboro error after a sacrifice bunt attempt from
C.J. Acosta (Burlington, N.C.).  Senior
Cory Lackey (Wilkesboro, N.C.) hit a triple to center field, which allowed Acosta to score to make it 2-0.
Greensboro cut the lead to 2-1 in the second inning, but Pfeiffer put five on the board in the third inning, with Acosta driving in two more with a single to right field.
Turner then made it 8-1 in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly that scored senior
Brady Parker.
The inclement weather then caused the game to be halted in the fourth, with Pfeiffer's Acosta at the plate with two outs.
On Monday afternoon, Pfeiffer gained the 9-1 advantage on a sacrifice fly by Acosta in the seventh inning. Pfeiffer kept pouring it on, with
Jiwon Yun ripping a two-RBU single to center field that pushed the lead to 11-1.
Greensboro provided the eventual 11-3 final after a two-RBI single in the ninth.
Falcon pitcher
John Owen got the win after throwing seven innings while allowing just one run while striking out seven Pride batters.
In game two,
Josh Turner game Pfeiffer the 1-0 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single to left field.
Greensboro bounced back to take the 2-1 lead in the sixth with a two-RBI single of their own.
The Falcons'
Cory Lackey and
Zach Ferrell both got RBI singles in the seventh inning, regaining the 3-2 lead for the Black and Yellow.
Greensboro answered with two runs in the home half of the seventh and added another in the eighth for the 5-3 final.
With the split, Pfeiffer now stands at 8-14 overall and 4-7 in league play while Greensboro is now 12-14 overall and 6-5 in league play.
Pfeiffer will step out of conference play this upcoming Wednesday, April 12, as they travel to take on No. 8 Lynchburg. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
