Pfeiffer Baseball Opens USA South Series With 7-5 Win at No. 16 Methodist
Fayetteville, N.C. (April 21, 2023) – Visiting Pfeiffer University used an offensive surge in the late innings to take a 7-5 road win over 16
th-ranked Methodist University in the opening game of their three-game USA South series on Friday afternoon in Fayetteville, N.C.
How it Happened
The Monarchs took a 3-0 lead after scoring two runs in the third inning and tacked on another in the fourth.
The Falcons struck for three runs in the sixth inning thanks to a three-run home run by graduate student
Christian Ezzell. The round-tripper is Ezzell's team-leading fourth of the season.
The Falcons would then take a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning on an RBI single from
Zach Ferrell. Ferrell's hit found the right-center gap of the Monarch outfield.
Methodist would regain the 5-4 lead in the home half of the seventh on a two-RBI single.
That lead was short-lived, as Alex Bell delivered a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning that tied the game at 5-5. Later in the inning, Ferrell hit another RBI single, this time to right field, allowing freshman
Austin Wood to score, making it 6-5.
In the ninth inning, Ezzell came through again, this time with an RBI double to right center that allowed
Josh Turner to scamper home, giving Pfeiffer the 7-5 win.
In the ninth, Pfeiffer pitcher
John Owen struck out all three Methodist batters to end the game. Owen earned the complete-game win to improve to 4-2 on the season. All total, Owen struck out 10 Methodist batters in the win, which ties a career-best. Owen has stuck out 10 batters on four other occasions during his Falcon career, three of which has been during the 2023 season
Pfeiffer will continue their USA South series with the Monarchs with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 23,. First pitch at Armstrong-Shelley Field in Fayetteville is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
