Falcons Drop 3-1 USA South Opener to Methodist

Misenheimer, N.C. (Sept. 13, 2023) --The Pfeiffer University volleyball team dropped their USA South opening match to the visiting Methodist Monarchs 3-1 (23-25, 12-25, 28-26, 22-25) on Wednesday night in Merner Gym.

The loss dropped Pfeiffer's record to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in USA South play.

Sophomore Haedyn McGrath finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Falcons offense while fellow sophomore Gabby Edwards had 20 digs.  Madison Tate, also a sophomore had five blocks to lead Pfeiffer defensiveily.

Game Notes

» Kylee Mayberry had a team-high two aces in the loss.
» Haedyn McGrath had a team-high 10 kills for Pfeiffer.
» Pfeiffer got a match-high 20 digs from Gabby Edwards.
» Pfeiffer attackers were helped by a team-high 24 assists from Kylee Mayberry.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The Falcons battled back from a seven-point 18-11 deficit, but Methodist held on to win the first set 25-23.

SET 2 | Pfeiffer fell in the second set 25-12, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. Pfeiffer trailed by as many as 13 points as Methodist grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5 in a set that was tied up four times before the Monarchs took over the lead.

SET 3 | After falling in the first two sets, Pfeiffer rallied to grab set three and make it a 2-1 match. The Falcons came out on top of a tight battle, winning 28-26 in a set that was tied six times and had two lead changes.

SET 4 | Pfeiffer couldn't build off the set-three victory and lost in the fourth set 25-22 to drop the match. Methodist grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 and Pfeiffer was never able to recover in a set that was tied up five times before the Monarchs took over in the second half of the stanza.

Up Next
Pfeiffer will travel to Danville, Va. for a nonconference tri-match on Thursday, Sept. 14.  The Falcons will take on VU-Lynchburg at 5:00 p.m. and will then play host Averett at 7:00 p.m.
