Staunton, Va. (Jan. 12, 2024) --Junior Daniel Fulp collected a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, but the Pfeiffer men's basketball team fell to the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels 85-81 in a USA South road game on Friday night.
In addition to Fulp's double-double, the Falcons (4-5, 1-2) were led by sophomore Doug Smith, who had 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots, and by junior Daymon Beckwith, who chipped in with 17 points.
Pfeiffer collected 48 rebounds in Friday's game compared to Mary Baldwin's 37, led by Fulp's 12 boards. The Falcons also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 14 rebounds into 24 second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 17-5, Pfeiffer went on a 7-0 run with 12:17 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Ty Black, to narrow its deficit to 17-12. Mary Baldwin answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Falcons down 42-36 entering halftime.
Mary Baldwin kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 73-62 advantage before Pfeiffer went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Alex Cunningham's layup, to shrink the deficit to 73-70 with 4:22 to go in the contest. Mary Baldwin responded and outscored the Falcons the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 85-81. Pfeiffer made the most of eight offensive rebounds to tack on 13 second chance points out of 45 total in the period.
