Buena Vista, Va. (Jan. 13, 2024) --The Pfeiffer men's basketball team shot 57.9 percent from three-point range on the way to an 89-76 victory over the Southern Virginia Knights on the road Saturday.
The Falcons (5-5, 2-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Daymon Beckwith, who had 13 points, four assists and three steals. Alex Cunningham added 12 points and Daniel Fulp chipped in as well with 11 points and six rebounds.
Pfeiffer shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 17 assists on 34 made field goals. Beckwith's four assists paced the Falcons and Clayton Robinson also added four assists of his own.
The Pfeiffer defense was a problem in Saturday's game, forcing 17 Southern Virginia turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 17 points on the offensive end of the floor. Beckwith's three steals led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
After falling behind 22-21, Pfeiffer went on a 7-0 run with 7:19 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Cunningham, to take a 28-22 lead. The Falcons then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 38-30 advantage. Pfeiffer capitalized on nine Southern Virginia turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.
Following intermission, Pfeiffer kept widening that lead, expanding it to 76-62 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Beckwith's layup, to grow the lead to 83-62 with 3:36 to go in the contest. The Knights narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 89-76 win. Pfeiffer got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 18 of its 51 total points.
