Misenheimer, N.C. (Jan. 20, 2024) --The Pfeiffer University men's basketball team kept Greensboro to just 9.1 percent from 3-point range in a 1-for-11 shooting performance on the way to a 74-56 home USA South win over the rival Pride on Saturday.
The Falcons (6-5, 3-2) had two players score in double figures, led by sophomore Doug Smith, who put together a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Daymon Beckwith tacked on 11 points and six rebounds while junior teammate Daniel Fulp added four points, six rebounds and four assists. Fulp also had a pair of steals.
Fulp pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace the Pfeiffer offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 14 second chance points.
Pfeiffer's defense held Greensboro to only 9.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 37.5 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 30-26 advantage, Pfeiffer went on a 6-0 run with 2:38 left in the first half to increase its lead to 36-26. The Falcons then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 36-28 advantage. Pfeiffer did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 36 points close to the basket.
Following halftime, Pfeiffer kept widening that lead, expanding it to 64-51 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 72-51 with 3:37 to go in the contest. The Pride narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Falcons still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-56 win. Pfeiffer got out on the break in the period, scoring 17 fast break points.
