MISENHEIMER, N.C. (Feb. 14, 2024) --Pfeiffer University sophomore Miya Horton hit a running layup in traffic with 10 seconds remaining to put the Pfeiffer women's basketball team up for good in a 60-59 come-from-behind win over the Brevard Tornados at Merner Gym on Wednesday.
The Falcons (7-16, 5-12) had four players score in double figures, led by Horton, who had 15 points and nine steals. Hannah Isley added 13 points and Alexis Bynum helped out with 12 points.
The Pfeiffer defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Wednesday's game, forcing 25 Brevard turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 30 points on the offensive end of the floor. Horton's nine steals led the way individually for the Falcons.
How It Happened
Pfeiffer struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Falcons continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-9 halftime deficit.
After halftime, Pfeiffer cut its deficit to 43-20 before going on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a three-pointer from Isley, to trim its deficit to 43-32 with 2:08 to go in the third. The Falcons continued to reduce the Brevard lead, shrinking it to 45-41 by the end of the third quarter. Pfeiffer knocked down six three-pointers in the quarter to score 18 of its 32 total points.
Pfeiffer trimmed the Brevard lead to 54-51 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Horton's jumper, to seize a 58-54 lead with 1:51 remaining. The Tornados attempted a late rally, but the Falcons was able to hold on for the 60-59 USA South win.
