MISENHEIMER, N.C. (March 23, 2024) -- The Pfeiffer University baseball team dropped the opening game of a USA South baseball series to Brevard College by a 13-12 score on Saturday night at Joe Ferebee FIeld.
Pfeiffer sophomore Jake Blevins (1-3) got the ball to start for Pfeiffer (7-9, 0-4) and took the loss. Freshman Dylan Dula was a bright spot for the Falcons, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
In the batter's box, the Falcons were led by senior Robbie Brown, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Sophomore Austin Wood put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Junior Wilson Lohrer also helped out for Pfeiffer, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding two doubles and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Falcons were trailing 7-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Pfeiffer's offense started clicking and put up five runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Wood and a two-run single from senior Cory Lackey.
The Falcons deficit expanded to 10-5 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the sixth inning. The Pfeiffer offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Brown, which brought the score to 10-9 in favor of the Tornados.
Brevard expanded their lead to 12-9 before the Pfeiffer offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 12-10 in the seventh.
The Tornados expanded their lead to 13-10 before the Pfeiffer offense got back to work, digging into that lead in the eighth. Senior Zach Ferrell and Lohrer each scored a run for the Falcons in the inning, bringing the score to 13-12 in favor of Brevard.
The ending was somewhat controversial, as an infield fly was deemed on a sky high ball that was clearly in the outfield. By rule, the Pfeiffer batter was called out, which was the second of the inning. The Falcon runner that was on second attempted to reach third but was tagged out by the Brevard catcher, which was the third out of the inning, ending the game.
