Baseball Rallies to Take Series-Opening Win at Mary Baldwin

GROTTOES, Va. (April 13, 2024) --The Pfeiffer Falcons responded from tied 6-6 in the eighth inning to win in exciting fashion, earning a 13-6 victory over the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Sam Odum (4-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (13-14, 5-8 USA South). The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings, giving up one hit, no walks and striking out two MBU batters..

At the plate, the Falcons were paced by senior Zach Ferrell, who went 3-for-6 on the day with a double, a home run and an RBI. Senior C.J. Acosta put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Ben Barnes also contributed for Pfeiffer, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate with two being doubles and adding an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Ferrell put Pfeiffer on the board with a leadoff home run off T. Hensley.

The Falcons lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the sixth trailing 6-1. The Pfeiffer offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Acosta, which tightened the Fighting Squirrels lead to 6-5.

Pfeiffer held the Fighting Squirrels off the board before rallying to tie it up at six in the seventh. The Falcons scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Cory Lackey.

The game stayed tied until the ninth inning, when Pfeiffer got going again on offense. The Falcons scored seven runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of senior Robbie Brown, bringing the Pfeiffer advantage to 12-6.
