Baseball Wins Series Against Greensboro; Splits Saturday DH

GAME 1
Pfeiffer def. Greensboro, 9-8


MISENHEIMER, N.C. (April 6, 2024) --The Pfeiffer Falcons earned a win in walk-off fashion, responding to score four in the bottom of the ninth after Greensboro took the lead in the top half, sealing the victory on senior Robbie Brown's two-run double to knock off the Pride 9-8 in game one of a USA South doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Joe Ferebee Field.

Sophomore Sam Odum (3-1) got the win out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (11-13, 4-7). The right-hander tossed one inning, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out one. Senior Thad Lewis started the game and went eight strong innings, surrendering four runs on six hits, walking three while striking out 10 Pride batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons were trailing 2-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Ben Barnes came across to score the lone run of the inning for Pfeiffer and get them on the board.

The Falcons kept the Pride off the board before tying it up in the third. Pfeiffer scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Austin Wood, which evened the score at 2-2.

Greensboro busted up the tie and took a 4-2 lead moving into the fifth, when Pfeiffer tied the game at four. The Falcons picked up two runs when a single from Wood scored senior C.J. Acosta and junior Josh Turner.

The game remained tied until the seventh inning, when Pfeiffer got moving again on offense. Acosta crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Falcons, bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of Pfeiffer.

Greensboro then rallied to take an 8-5 lead before Pfeiffer scored four runs in the bottom half of the ninth to grab the win, walking it off

In game two, Ben Barnes put together an outstanding showing at the plate, hitting two home runs, but the Falcons dropped a 17-11 decision.

Freshman Dylan Dula (0-3) came out of the bullpen for Pfeiffer (11-14, 4-8) and took the loss. Freshman Cayman Buck was a bright spot for the Falcons, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing three innings, giving up one run on four hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Barnes went 2-for-5 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBIs. Senior Zach Ferrell added to Barnes' awesome power-hitting performance by going 5-for-6 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Senior C.J. Acosta also chipped in for the Falcons, going 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 3-0, the Falcons first put runs on the board in the first inning. Pfeiffer's offense produced a three-run output that included home runs from both Ferrell and Barnes.

The Pride broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the third inning, when the Falcons got back on the scoreboard. The Pfeiffer offense exploded for seven runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Ferrell and a two-run home run from Barnes, which brought the score to 10-6 in favor of the Falcons.

Pfeiffer's lead had evaporated by the time the sixth inning arrived and turned into a 16-10 Greensboro advantage, when the Falcons cut that deficit to 16-11. The Falcons scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Wilson Lohrer. The Falcons were unable to get any closer, as Greensboro added one run to their tally on the way to a 17-11 final.
